Research Stance
For resource-poor country, it is very important to import fuel, materials, and raw materials to produce high value-added products. It has been a long time since the need for a key industry to follow in the footsteps of the automobile was mentioned, but the possibility of a new industry supporting the backbone of our country, from small and medium-sized companies to large corporations, is uncertain. Recently, many people have misunderstood that the policy of electrification, especially in Europe, is synonymous with electric vehicles, but this is not true. Therefore, the development of complex machines is one of Japan's strong points, and I expect that the Japanese automobile industry will be able to play an active role in the global market, including emerging countries.
According to the IEA (International Energy Agency) forecast, as a realistic scenario, the annual global sales of passenger cars in 2050 are expected to be around 140 million units, 1.4 times the current level. Of these, 80% will be passenger cars with engines, which are still expected to play a leading role. Furthermore, there may be no replacement for heavy vehicles such as trucks and buses, stationary engines, and large engines for ships.
The energy conversion processes of engines, catalysts, and batteries are unsteady and deal with the heat flow of multi-component gas-liquid-solid and surface chemical species at temperatures ranging from room temperature to over 2000°C. It is no exaggeration to say that this is one of the most difficult areas of mechanical engineering. Against this background, my laboratory selects and develops difficult research themes that are not influenced by fads or rumors, but are truly directly related to contemporary issues. In addition, I am always conscious of "when" and "how" our research will lead to the development of machinery industries.
Thermodynamics and fluid mechanics are particularly important among the three mechanics of mechanical systems, and based on these two mechanics, I have built up chemical reaction theories and transport theories and studied new findings with my staff. In October 2014, we established the "Next Generation Vehicle Research Organization" with great support from Tohoku University, and have been conducting research mainly on large-scale national projects.

Research Themes

Research themes in the Jin Kusaka Laboratory are as follows. However, there is no need to worry because the curriculum is designed so that students can naturally acquire the ability to carry out experiments and numerical calculations through lectures and exercises starting from the third year of undergraduate studies or the first year of master's studies. There are three major areas of research: 1) Research on engines and catalysts using carbon-neutral fuels, 2) Research on hybrid vehicles, and 3) Research on electric vehicles.
1. Research on engines and catalysts using carbon-neutral fuels
1.1 Next-generation Otto cycle engines with 55% thermal efficiency
1.2 Next generation Diesel cycle engines with 55% thermal efficiency
1.3 Research on high performance and compactness of exhaust gas after treatment catalysts for carbon neutral fuel engines
1.4 Optimization of carbon neutral fuel design and engine design
1.5 Stationary large engine using hydrogen and NH3 utilization with natural gas
2. Research on hybrid vehicles (overlaps with research on electric vehicles in section 3)
2.1 Numerical simulation of internal transport phenomena in lithium-ion batteries
2.2 Equivalent circuit modeling of motors and inverters
2.3 Research on energy management control for HEVs
3. Research on electric vehicles (overlaps with the research on hybrid vehicles in 2)
3.1 Studies of thermal management of batteries, inverters and motors
3.2 Research and development of battery electric trucks
In addition to the above, we have been commissioned to conduct various research projects by automobile-related companies, energy-related companies, and the government.

Research Award (The Outstanding Presentation Award has been omitted due to the large number of awards received.)
We have received numerous awards, including four best paper awards for engine combustion-related research, three for catalysts, and four for integrated powertrain research (engine, motor, battery). Future automotive powertrains require a holistic view as a system; engine combustion cannot function without a catalyst, and catalysts cannot function without engine control. Furthermore, hybrids are integrated systems including the engine system, motor, battery, and thermal management. It is essential to deeply research each research topic while always being mindful of the entire automotive powertrain.
